What are tags?

Tags are like keywords or labels. You can assign as many tags as you like to any wine. Tags are a great way to label items by style ("terroir", "modern", "rustic", and so on), visual characteristics (golden, straw, cloudy), aromas (blackberry, bell pepper, corked) mouthfeel (astringent, rich, "long aftertaste"), or even by great food pairings (grilled steak, scallops, chicken cacciatore). Go a little crazy and tag a wine with "sunshine in a glass", "revolutionary", or both. Tags can be fun and versatile.

Okay, I get it. But what are tags good for?

Tagging wines in your Tasting Journal makes it easier to find them later or see patterns; click on a tag word and you can instantly see a list of items you've tagged with that term. But what's really interesting is that you can also view everyone else's tags! Wonder what a new wine tastes like? Check it's tags. Explore how different people tag the wines you like, or view what the entire site thinks is a "delicious" "summer" rosé. It's a lot of fun.

How do I tag a wine?

If you have tasted a wine and would like to tag it, you should first search to see if it has already been reviewed by other Vinorati members to save you time. Enter the name of the wine in the Find a wine! box at the top of the page and click on OK. A list of wines matching your search term will appear. If the wine name and vintage of your wine show up in the list you are in luck. Once you click on the vintage you will find a green "Review this wine!" button on the wine page. Now enter your review including your keywords or tags, on this Wine Review page.

If the wine name but not the vintage shows up in your search results you have one extra step to follow. Click on any other vintage of your wine and scroll down to find the grey "Duplicate" button. You will be taken to the "Add a wine" page and you need only change the vintage to add the new entry and then, as above review it using your key words on the Wine Review page. *Note: this same duplicate technique could work if you find a wine made by the same producer, but from a different vinyard, or made with different varietals.

If you cannot find your wine (or a similar one to duplicate), you will have to add it to the database by clicking on the big green "Add a new wine!" button on the left side of the site. Once you have added all the details that describe this wine on the "Add a wine" page you submit the information and you will be taken to the Wine Review page. It is here that you can enter your review, including your keywords or tags.

I have a tag on the tip of my tongue... Can you help jog my memory?

Clicking on the green question marks to the right of the Tag (Overall, Eye, Nose, and Mouth,) boxes on the Wine Review page will open a window with a small list of commonly used wine tasting terms.
